Owner Harry Melling first became involved in NASCAR when his company Melling Tool sponsored Benny Parsons in 1979.

The team began in 1982 with driver Bill Elliott. Elliott won the 1988 championship for Melling Racing. Elliott raced for Melling until 1991. The combination finished in the Top 4 in the final points from 1983 to 1988.
