The 2009 Sprint Cup Series was the 61st season of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The season began with the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 15 and ended with the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway on November 22.

Tony Stewart led the regular season points standings heading into the Chase cutoff race at Richmond, but following the race was seeded 2nd behind Mark Martin. Martin would win the first race of the Chase and would hold the points lead through the third race of the Chase, but wins by Jimmie Johnson at Dover and Fontana would propel him to the points lead. Johnson extended his lead with a win at Charlotte, while good finishes at Martinsville and Talladega would provide a cushion that protected the points lead after Johnson experienced trouble at Texas. Johnson would rally back to win at Phoenix, and would win his fourth consecutive championship with a 5th place finish at Homestead. Johnson won the championship with a 141-point lead over teammate Martin and a 179-point lead over Jeff Gordon, ensuring a Hendrick Motorsports 1-2-3 finish in the standings.

2009 was notable for a number of team mergers and changes, as the season was ran in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis. Dale Earnhardt, Inc and Chip Ganassi Racing merged to form Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, and Petty Enterprises and Gillett Evernham Motorsports merged to form Richard Petty Motorsports. Hall of Fame Racing and Yates Racing announced an alliance in January 2009, while Bill Davis Racing was sold to new ownership and renamed Triad Racing. Additionally, Tony Stewart became the co-owner of the former Haas CNC Racing team, renaming the team Stewart-Haas Racing.

Before the start of the season, NASCAR modified restart rules to expand the single file restart window to the final 20 laps of the race, up from the previous 10 laps. However, by June, NASCAR changed the rules entirely and implemented double file restarts following successes at the Sprint All Star Race and Budweiser Shootout. Aside from limited exceptions for safety or practicality purposes, the restart rules have remained the same since 2009 as of the 2023 season.

2009 was the first season without a Petty family driver competing in NASCAR history. The famed Wood Brothers Racing team also moved to a partial schedule due to sponsorship difficulties. It was the final season that Roush Fenway Racing (or any other organization) fielded five full time teams, as a rule change enacted in 2006 limited the number of teams an organization could field to four, and the #26 team was closed at the season’s conclusion.
