Foyt, who came out of retirement to run this race. Other open-wheelers who attempted the race but did not qualify were Davy Jones, Gary Bettenhausen, and P.J. Jones.
- Michael Kranefuss made his first start as an owner in this race, fielding the entry driven by Brabham.
- This was the first Winston Cup race in which all three of the Bodines (Geoff, Brett, and Todd) led the race. Controversy erupted from this when Brett wrecked Geoff midway through the race. It was later revealed that the incident was the result of disagreements the two were having.
