1993 Featherlite Southwest Tour Races

In the eight year history of the Southwest Tour Series, no driver had ever won back-to-back championships. In fact, no driver had ever won more than one title. That all changed in 1993 when Palmdale, California's Ron Hornaday, Jr. won his second consecutive tour championship. The road to the title was not an easy one as Hornaday had to fend off 1990 champion, Doug George

Hornaday's final season stacked up like this: 5 wins, 14 top 5s and 15 top 10s. Hornaday's first victory of the year came in the fourth race of the season at Stockton 99 Speedway in the Coors 100 in May. Hornaday then won the next two races in June at Sonoma's twisty road course in the Budweiser 200, then the Miller Genuine Draft 100 at Orange Show Speedway. His next win came at Eureka's 3/8 mile, Redwood Acres Raceway in the Olympia 100. The final win came at Stockton again in the Plummer Pontiac 100.

Points runnerup George started off the season in February at Phoenix by winning the prestegious Skoal Copper World Classic. George then won at Mesa Marin Raceway in the Coors 100 in April. George won again in Bakersfield in the Wrangler Firecracker 100 but had to wait until August for his final win at Colorado National Raceway in the Colorado Chevrolet/Geo 100. 55 year old Dale Williams made history by becoming the oldest driver to win rookie of the year honors in the series. Williams finished third in points and won three races in 1993, at San Bernardino in the Coors 100 in June, then at Mesa Marin in the July Vons Coca Cola 100 and finally at Saugus Speedway in the Featherlite Trailers 100. Craig Raudman narrowly lost the rookie battle to Williams but still finished fourth in points while Jim Inglebright placed fifth with two wins at Las Vegas in the Miller Genuine Draft 100 and at Tucson Raceway Park in the Checker/Valvoline 100.

Keith Spangler was sixth in the standings while Doug McCoun was seventh. Lance Hooper finished eighth while Ken Boyd was ninth and Bob Lyon finished tenth, winning his first career race at Tucson in the Budweiser/PIR 100. Other winners during the season included M.K. Kanke who won his first career race at Cajon Speedway in the Budweiser 100, Steve Portenga in the Community First Bank 200 and ASA star Scott Hansen also scored his first career win in the season finale at Phoenix.
