The 1992 Hooters 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 15, 1992. The pattern the race, the 1992 season finale, wove is by far the most dramatic in NASCAR history. Bill Elliott led 102 of the laps in route to a strong victory. But Alan Kulwicki led one more lap in route to a 2nd place effort, and the one extra lap was just enough for Kulwicki to win the points championship. If Kulwicki had led one less lap then Elliott, Elliott would have gotten the ten bonus points instead, tying him with Kulwicki on top of the points and giving Elliott the nod due to the victory tiebreaker. Meanwhile, Richard Petty (35th) made his 1185th and final career start, while Jeff Gordon (31st) made his first. Stats
