The 1990 Atlanta Journal 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Atlanta Motor Speedway on November 18, 1990. It was the season finale. Morgan Shepherd led just 64 of the 328 laps, but pulled away to a two-and-a-half second victory on Geoffrey Bodine, Shepherd's only win of the year. With his 3rd place effort, Dale Earnhardt won the championship, which was bathed in controversy. Mark Martin, who had been docked an abnormally high 46 points for a rules infraction on Richmond, lost the championship by 26 markers, which cost Martin his best chance at winning the championship in his career.
