The Race::1977 Winston Western 500 was a Winston Cup Series (now Nextel Cup) - Winston West Series (now known as the ) event held at Track::Riverside International Raceway on January 16, 1977. It was the season opener for both series. Cale Yarborough dominated much of the event, leading 102 of the 119 laps before David Pearson came on late. Pearson worked by Yarborough and pulled away to a nine-second victory. Yarborough, since he had led the most laps, was tied with Pearson for the top spot. Yarborough started the year on top, ended the year on top of the points and only once in mid-July would he not be atop the points.
