The 1976 Winston Cup Series was the 28th season of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. The season began with the Winston Western 500 at Riverside International Raceway on January 18 and ended with the Los Angeles Times 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway on November 21.
Cale Yarborough won his first Winston Cup championship in his fifth full-time season, with 9 wins in the season, including four races in a row between September 12th and October 3rd. He defeated Richard Petty by 195 points.
1976 marked the final start for Buck Baker, who became the final driver from the first season in 1949 to compete in a race. It also marked the debut of Janet Guthrie and future Cup champion Bill Elliott.
